My stock of yew continues to grow

Firstly, I would like to apologise for the string of blog posts I’ve written, dedicated to my pursuit of yew – I promise I’ll be writing about a different timber next time! However, after mentioning the wood I found at Brackenburgh recently, I thought I’d post some photos, now that it’s all been collected.

This turned out to be a much bigger job than I anticipated! I agreed to take all thirteen short stumps and one log, when I originally spoke to the felling contractor. However, these were dotted around the site and when collected, made for a much bigger pile than I ever imagined. Once cut up, I needed to make three journeys in the van to take them away. The chainsaw took quite a battering, as there was plenty of muck inside the timber and the day finally came to a close when I eventually hit a stone – luckily, this was on the last stump!

Most of the wood was off the beaten track, so had to be wheel barrowed to the van. I was certainly ready for my bed by the end of the day!

The top image shows all three van loads stacked up in the barn. I reckon this is the best time to stock up with timber – if this was early summer, I’d be concerned about it all cracking. However, there’s still been a few warm days, so I’ll try and get it rough turned quickly.
